Three teenage girls share there perspective on participating in the Civil War. Annie Gordon, age 13, disguises herself as a boy to join The Portsmouth Rifles of the 9th Virginia Army as they begin their march to Gettysburg. Tillie Pierce, age 14, thinks war is romantic, but discovers when the fighting begins that there is no romance about war. Grace Bryan is a free black girl who decides not to flee with the black slaves for fear the southern rebels would arrest her as a runaway slave. All three girls give their personal perspective about their surroundings and the Civil War.
